France coach Deschamps: Juventus midfielder Pogba needs to play before World Cup; he can handle family issues

France coach Didier Deschamps says Paul Pogba needs to prove himself on the pitch to make the World Cup.

The Juventus midfielder is back in training after undergoing knee surgery last month.

Deschamps said: "I will have to decide, but for the moment I cannot say that he will not be ready for the World Cup. The number one condition for his call-up is that he is cured, then the fact that a lot of time has passed without playing could be a problem… I hope he can play with Juventus as long as possible before the World Cup."

Deschamps was also asked about Pogba's problems with his family and brother Mathias now being in custody for an alleged extortion attempt against him.

“These are serious things, big problems for him but I've talked to him often and he seems quite serene," said the coach.

"They are not pleasant things, but they happen ... Paul has a strength of character that allows him to handle these things, however serious they are.

"I do not wish it will happen to anyone."
