Transfer: John Murtough blocked Barcelona star from joining Man United

Manchester United’s football director, John Murtough blocked Erik ten Hag’s plans to sign Barcelona full-back Sergino Dest over the summer.

The 21-year-old Dest was surplus to requirement at Barcelona during the summer transfer window as the Catalan giants sought to raise funds to register some of their new players.

Ten Hag wanted to reunite with the American who he managed at Ajax during the 2019-20 season.

The USA international left Ajax in a deal around £18m to join Barcelona and was interested in a reunion with the right-back this summer.

The Athletic reports that Murtough wanted Aaron Wan-Bissaka to remain at Old Trafford and be part of the manager’s plans, despite ten Hag originally placing him on the transfer list.

Wan-Bissaka has only managed four minutes of action this season, coming off the bench in Manchester United’s win over Liverpool in August.

The England right-back was not even on the bench in United’s last two league games and was an unused substitute in the club’s Europa League match against Real Sociedad, with Diogo Dalot starting the season as ten Hag’s firm first choice.
