Steve Nicol sympathizes with Liverpool, identifies Reds’ major problem

Liverpool legend, Steve Nicol, has sympathized with the club amid the injury crisis that has plagued manager Jurgen Klopp’s midfield.

Nicol also suggested that Liverpool is struggling this season because of Klopp’s dependence on James Milner and Harvey Elliott in midfield.

Klopp has been forced to rely on Milner and Elliot to partner Fabinho in the midfield because the likes of Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara, Naby Keita, and Alex Oxlade Chamberlain are currently injured.

Milner and Elliott started for Liverpool in their embarrassing Champions League 4-1 defeat to Napoli mid-week.

“There’s no question, you have to sympathize with Liverpool as far as the injuries (are concerned),” Nicol told ESPN FC.

He added, “You have to play James Milner, who signed a contract basically to be able to give other players a rest and come on for half an hour. That is what James Milner signed a new contract for, and that is why they asked him to do it.

“But he has to play in your biggest game of the season, and Harvey Elliott is a rookie. This guy is learning his trade, and so when you have got two of your midfielders in the position they are in, one with no experience and one with too much experience, then the engine room is going to be in trouble.”
