Boehly, Tuchel agree on top player Chelsea will sign in January

Chelsea will reignite a move for Ajax’s Edson Alvarez in January after manager Thomas Tuchel and chairman Todd Boehly agreed on the club’s need for a central midfielder in the January transfer window.

According to the Evening Standard, Tuchel and Boehly have agreed to revisit a move for Alvarez next year after the Mexican midfielder made it clear that he wants to move to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea failed with a move for Alvarez in the final 48 hours of the summer transfer window, with Ajax unwilling to listen to offers for the player, having lost a series of first-team players already.

Chelsea were scrambling for signings in the window’s final days, and Denis Zakaria arrived on loan from Juventus after the west London club’s failed pursuit of Alvarez.

In any case, Tuchel and Boehly agree that Chelsea’s midfield is an area that requires urgent attention in the next transfer window, with Jorginho and N’Golo Kante both having less than a year left on their deals at the club, while there is uncertainty over Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s future.

The report added that Dinamo Moscow midfielder Arsen Zakharyan is another target, with Chelsea showing keen interest in the 19-year-old.
