Transfer: He’ll sulk all season – Pennant warns over Chelsea’s latest interest

Former Liverpool winger, Jermaine Pennant has said that Leicester City are right to sell Wesley Fofana this summer.

He said by letting the France star leave, they will avoid getting stuck with a ‘sulking’ player.

Chelsea and Leicester City have now agreed a deal that will see the 21-year-old move to Stamford Bridge this summer.

Pennant, who also played for Arsenal, said that the last thing Brendan Rodgers would want now is to be stuck with a player who is unhappy.

The 21-year-old Frenchman is valued at £70m to £80 million and Chelsea have had their earlier bid of £60m rejected by the Forces before reaching agreement, with their latest offer which is yet undisclosed.

Speaking on Gameday Countdown, Pennant said: “They’ve got to sell him. They have to sell him because if he’s not in the right place.

“His head’s not going to get any better, especially if that move doesn’t come.

“He’s going to be sulking all the way through and Leicester will have lost the player and they’ll have no money.

“What the club should have done is speak to the player and find out where his head is at.

“They can’t hold him to ransom because he’s going to lose his head and he’s not going to be any good to you moving forward and then you’re losing out on a lot of money with which you can replace that player.”

Chelsea are in search of more defenders to fill the void created by Andreas Christensen and Antony Rudiger of whom departed Stamford Brigde as free agents this summer. While Rudiger has settled well in Real Madrid, Christensen joined Xavi Hernandez’s Barcelona side.

Fofana was punished by manager Brendan Rodgers for trying to force his way out of the King Power Stadium
