Athletic Bilbao coach Valverde delighted after victory over Valencia

 


Athletic Bilbao coach Ernesto Valverde was delighted with victory over Valencia.

Alex Berenguer's 42nd-minute strike sealed a first win of the season, ensuring the Athleticzales in attendance were well rewarded for their efforts.

"People coming to San Mamés to enjoy the match like it's a party is essential and it helps us a lot. Their unconditional support pushes us on. The atmosphere that creates is very special and it wins us points," Valverde said in his post-match press conference.

The boss praised his player's mature performance, singling out their ability to up the intensity throughout the 90 minutes.

"I liked that we grew in intensity and showed more determination as the game went on," he said. "This is about building momentum and gaining positions. It's a long-distance race and you have to go little by little."

He added: "It was a very intense match, from the first minute to the last. Valencia are a good team, they have players who create a lot of danger. In general, it was a hard-fought and entertaining game. Thankfully we've come through it with three more points."
