Warnock: I could have signed Van Dijk for £5m!

Neil Warnock admitted he was given the chance to sign Virgil van Dijk at Crystal Palace for just £5m - but his chief scout rejected the deal because they deemed him too slow.

The move nearly came about before Van Dijk moved to Southampton in 2015. He was snapped up by Liverpool for £75m three seasons later.

"The one that got away from me was Virgil van Dijk," he told the Mirror. "I was offered him at Crystal Palace for £5m but my chief scout said he was too slow and he ended up at Southampton instead.

"It's a shame because anything he may lack in pace, he makes up for ten-fold in his ability to read the game."
