James Ward-Prowse could be the subject of a transfer window tug of war between Manchester United and Manchester City, according to The Sun on Sunday.
Erik ten Hag is said to have identified the £75m-rated Southampton midfielder as the player to help improve the midfield at Old Trafford.
The new United manager has turned to Ward-Prowse after United baulked at the £150m asking price set by West Ham for Declan Rice.
Ten Hag is believed to feel Ward-Prowse can operate in the holding role for United - as does Pep Guardiola, who believes the Saints skipper can help to replace the departing Fernandinho.
