UCL: He’ll be sad, disappointed – Emery speaks on Villarreal star that caused 3-2 defeat to Liverpool

Villarreal boss, Unai Emery has reacted to goalkeeper, Geronimo Rulli’s mistakes that cost the Yellow Submarines heavily in the Champions League semi-finals second leg against Liverpool on Tuesday.

Rulli’s mistakes helped Liverpool to recover from a 2-0 down to beat the home side 3-2 in the second half.

After losing 2-0 at Anfield in the first leg, the tiny Spanish club led 2-0 at half-time at home.

But the Reds came back stronger in the second half, with goals from Fabinho, Luis Diaz and Sadio Mane handing the Reds a 5-2 win on aggregate.

Fabinho’s strike went straight through Rulli’s legs, while Diaz’s header was also pretty much straight at the goalkeeper.

Rulli then rushed a long way out of his penalty area, missed the ball by a distance and allowed Mane to fire into an empty net.

Emery, a former Sevilla and Arsenal boss, admitted the goalkeeper had made blunders, but insisted he had full faith in him and he has had a tremendous campaign in general.

“I shake hands with all my players at the end,” Emery said while speaking with reporters after the game.

“He [Rulli] was disappointed of course because I think he believes that maybe the first goal, he let it slip through his legs and maybe he could have done something else.

“Of course he will be sad tonight and I am sad tonight…nothing to tell him off about.”
