Burnley caretaker boss Jackson: We are disappointed and devastated for the club

Burnley caretaker boss Mike Jackson admits relegation is difficult to put into words.

Burnley were defeated 2-1 by Newcastle United at Turf Moor, with Maxwel Cornet on target after Callum Wilson's double, a result which ended the club's stay in the Premier League after six-years.

Jackson said: “It's a bit raw still at the moment, there's no words. The game as a whole, we gave away a penalty and that just knocked us a little but and we didn't really recover from that.

“We score a goal to get back into it, and as I've said to the group, they gave everything today and, on another day, they go and win the game. I can't thank them enough for giving me the opportunity to work with that group, and we gave everything.

“We've had some really good chances there and on another day they go in but they kept going in the second-half. The penalty and the second goal took the wind out of their sails a little bit in the second-half.

“I couldn't ask anymore to work with a group of guys who have given everything but I'm just really gutted for them."

On the supporters, Jackson added: “We are disappointed and devastated for the club, they were with us right until the end with us and they were brilliant. I'm sure that they have seen us fighting and they are really disappointed like us.

“We tried our best for them but in the end, we came up a little bit short.

“The fans have been great on this little journey that we have had, and the players appreciate that massively. I'm sure the club will use this to try and come back a lot stronger."
