World Cup playoff: Eguavoen names three key Super Eagles stars that made Nigeria lose to Ghana

Former Super Eagles interim coach, Augustine Eguavoen has named three players whose absence cost Nigeria a place in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Eguavoen said that his problems started when Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi got injured.

Ndidi was forced to withdraw from the two-legged playoff match after suffering a knee injury in a Europa Conference League round of 16 tie at Rennes.

Explaining the ordeal that led to Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the tournament on SuperSport, the former coach pointed out that Ndidi’s replacement, Innocent Bonke was also ruled out after suffering an injury in Kumasi.

To further worsen the situation, Frank Onyeka had to be changed at halftime due to injury.

This left the coach with only Oghenekaro Etebo, and the Watford star could only play for 60 minutes, having just recovered from a long term injury.

“Imagine a Ghana without a Partey. Losing Ndidi was first of all a problem and then we made amends by bringing in Bonke who is a ball winner and then he got injured as well,” the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations said.

“Onyeka who was also on top of his game, also got injured so he had a bit of a problem.

“Etebo, who’s just coming back from injury, played well in Kumasi when he came in but he only had to give us his best for the first sixty minutes.

“If you look at the bench now, who would have come in? It’s just to change formation within the players. At 1-1 we needed to get that one goal but it just didn’t happen.”
