UCL: Rio Ferdinand names player to win 2022 Ballon d’ Or

Former England and Manchester United defender, Rio Ferdinand has tipped Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema to win the 2022 Ballon d’Or.

Ferdinand said this after Benzema scored a hat-trick in Real Madrid’s Champions League 3-1 win over Chelsea on Wednesday at Stamford Bridge.

Recall that three goals from the France international gave Carlo Ancelotti’s side a first-leg advantage against Chelsea ahead of the second leg tie next week in Spain.

Speaking to BT Sport after the match, Ferdinand described Benzema’s display against Chelsea as a masterclass.

He said: “Karim Benzema. If they are not engraving his name on the Ballon d’Or I will be surprised.

“He’s been magic. Last tie, he was magnificent and grabbed a hat-trick. Tonight he’s done the same and got another hat-trick. This man made the difference, yes, they got their tactics right with Vinicius out on the right and pinning Christensen back. But, he put the chances away as they came and dispatched them beautifully. What a masterclass.”
