Jamie Carragher tells Liverpool cunning tactic that can finally secure new Mohamed Salah contract

The Egyptian star is involved in a long-running contract saga with the Reds. His deal is due to expire in summer 2023 and talks over an extension have proven problematic. Indeed, the deal is likely to represent Salah’s last bumper pay-day of his career. As such, the 29-year-old, understandably, wants to maximise his earnings.

Talk of a £500,000 deal have been swashed aside, though that would be fair given what his peers in the game earn. As one of the world’s top stars, that is the sort of fee he will probably earn elsewhere.

But FSG do have a limit and they are not prepared to shatter their salary structure for Salah. As such, a game of patience has played out between player and club.

Salah, though, has dropped a massive hint that he is preparing to stay. Amid a teasing post on social media, Salah claims the talks with Liverpool are “sensitive” and that “there are many things people don’t know about”.

As a result, there now seems a growing belief that Salah will extend his stay at Liverpool.

The 28-goal forward played a key role at at the Etihad on Sunday as Liverpool played out a 2-2 draw with Manchester City. His excellent pass for Sadio Mane saw his teammate fire home the equaliser. And while he did not score, Salah grew into the game, once again underlining his quality.

Now Carragher reckons Liverpool FC can finally tie Salah down by warning him he will damage his legacy were he to move somewhere else

Comparing what Fernando Torres did by quitting Liverpool for Chelsea, Carragher wants the Reds to take a selfish approach.

“I still think Mo Salah will sign a new contract,” Carragher told Sky Sports. “Liverpool is the best place for him, he became a superstar at Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp brings out the best in him. It wouldn’t be a sensible move for him to leave.

“The football he’s playing now, he’s playing for one of the best managers in the world, one of the best teams in the world. What he’s done over the last five years makes him one of the best players to ever wear a Liverpool shirt.

“I just think it would be sad if he were to move on, maybe to a rival in this country, he’d lose his legacy at Liverpool. You look at what happened to Fernando Torres going to Chelsea. I just don’t think it would be great for his career. Where could he go that’s better than Liverpool right now?”

“It took more courage from Liverpool because Manchester City are such a special team technically. We’ve not seen anyone like them in our league,” Carragher added on Sky Sports. “Every other team in the Premier League when they play Man City, they drop off and they hope for a goal on the counter-attack.

“Liverpool are the only team who try to take them on at their own game – and they’re good enough to do that.
