He hasn’t given up yet – Tuchel hails Chelsea star after 6-0 win over Southampton

Chelsea boss, Thomas Tuchel has said Timo Werner made an important statement with his performance against Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday.

Chelsea bounced back from a 4-1 heavy defeat to Brentford last weekend and midweek’s 3-1 loss to Real Madrid in the Champions League to thrash Southampton 6-0.

Werner scored twice against Southampton and Tuchel insisted the forward ‘needed’ to ‘make a statement and prove he remains an ‘important player’ at the club

Marcos Alonso, Mason Mount and Kai Havertz also got on the scoresheet.

Werner has been linked with a move away from Chelsea in recent weeks and Tuchel insisted the onus was on the German striker to ‘make a statement’ against Southampton.

So it was set out for him[Werner] to deliver, honestly. Everything was there for him to deliver and make a statement that he has not given u, that he is still an important player of this club and this group. And he did,” Tuchel told his post-match press conference.

“It was necessary, very good and strong, but necessary.”

Up next for the Blues is a trip to Spain, Santiago Bernabeu to be precise. Where they will take on Real Madrid in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

Chelsea will be looking to overturn a 3-1 deficit against Real Madrid in the Spain capital on Tuesday.
