Arteta Reveals regret after Partey picks up red card against Liverpool

Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta has said his only regret about Thomas Partey’s red card is that he will not be available for this weekend’s Premier League game against Burnley.

Partey was introduced from the bench against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg despite only flying in from the Africa Cup of Nations.

The tie was finely balanced after the first-leg ended 0-0 at Anfield last week, with Granit Xhaka also getting red-carded after 24 minutes.

And Partey became the latest Gunner to see red in the tie, picking up two yellow cards in less than 10 minutes as they lost 2-0 at the Emirates.

After the clash, Arteta was asked whether he regretted bringing Partey.

“No. Well I regret that I cannot use him now, but he made the effort to come and we had to play.

“He hasn’t had one single training session, Martin [Odegaard] as well, Laca [Lacazette] had a yellow card,” he claimed.

“We had to make a decision and we had to use him,” Arteta said.

The Spaniard was then asked whether Partey’s red card could be put down to a mix of fatigue and jet lag.

He simply responded, “No, I don’t think so.”
