AFCON 2021: Eguavoen snubs Iwobi, Iheanacho, names Super Eagles star that will play no.10 role

Interim Super Eagles coach, Austin Eguavoen has dropped a strong hint that he will hand Chidera Ejuke the No.10 role in the team at this month’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The tournament holds from January 9 to February 6 in Cameroon.

Ejuke, who plays for CSKA Moscow in Russia, is one of the 13 debutants in the Eagles squad for the tournament.

The winger has been outstanding for his club this season, scoring four goals and providing two assists in 13 games.

According to CIES Observatory’s latest rankings, the 24-year-old is the third-best dribbler in the world and Eguavoen believes he can help solve the team’s lack of creativity in midfield.

In the past, Gernot Rohr has played with Alex Iwobi of Everton or Leicester City’s Iheanacho behind the main striker.

But speaking at a press conference ahead of the team’s departure for the tournament, Eguavoen said, “The creative role is where the team has been lacking.

“Of late, we have found Chidera (Ejuke) but if it is not working, we may have to change our tactics and be flexible in the way we play.”

Nigeria plays seven-time champions Egypt in their opening game, January 11, before they battle Sudan four days later.
