Lewandowski equals Cristiano Ronaldo’s record in Bayern’s win

Robert Lewandowski has equalled one of Cristiano Ronaldo’s numerous records in Bayern Munich’s win over Wolfsburg on Friday night.

Lewandowski scored his 69th goal in the 2021 calendar year to equal Ronaldo’s 2013 record.

Former Barcelona ace Lionel Messi holds the overall record of 91 goals set in 2012.

The Polish striker, who broke Gerd Müller’s old record for goals in a season when he scored his 41st last May, again left it late to score on Friday.

Lewandowski scored in the 87th minute, lashing on to Jamal Musiala’s cross acrobatically to grab the record.

Bayern have now opened a nine-point lead before the rest of the 17th round. Dayot Upamecano and Leroy Sané also scored.

The Poland star had already scored 18 times in the league this season and he scored 23 goals in 20 previous Bundesliga games against Wolfsburg – more than against any other team.

Lewandowski was seen by many as best suited for the 2021 ballon d’Or award but the most prestigious individual gong was handed to Lionel Messi, who also acknowledged that the Polish striker deserves to be crowned world best footballer.
