Ikoyi Club suspends Alakija over alleged assault, abuse

The renowned Ikoyi Club in Lagos has suspended Modupe Alakija, the husband of Folorunsho Alakija, over alleged assault.

Folorunsho is a Nigerian billionaire businesswoman who is extolled as Africa’s richest woman.

Modupe, who is a lawyer, is the son of Adeyemo Alakija, the famed Nigerian legal practitioner.

In a circular signed by Bamidele Ibironke, the secretary of Ikoyi Club, Modupe was accused of physically assaulting and abusing one of its members.

The notice said the suspension would run from December 2021 to November 2022.

“The above-named member of the club is hereby placed on a one-year suspension for physically assaulting and abusing a fellow member,” it read.

“Conduct injurious to the interest of the club, thereby violating Rule 9(C) of the club’s rule book. This suspension takes effect from December 1, 2021 to November 30th 2022.”

Tunde Orungbeja, the club’s general manager, who also confirmed the development to TheCable Lifestyle, said the issue is being handled internally.

“[What exactly transpired] is an information that I cannot share with you. Whatever happened in the Ikoyi Club is basically an internal affair. It’s a private member club and it’s managed within the club,” he said.

“If it’s anything that needs to go to the public, the club will duly notify the public about it.”
