Paul Merson Explains Why Chelsea Will Fail to Secure Top-four Under Tuchel

Former Arsenal star, Paul Merson, has explained why Chelsea will fail to secure a top-four position on the Premier League table this season under their manager, Thomas Tuchel.

Chelsea are currently in the 5th position on the English Premier League table with two points behind fourth-place West Ham United and three points ahead of sixth-place Liverpool after 25 matches.

But Merson feels Chelsea will miss out from the top-four this term because of their attacking limitations under Tuchel.

According to him, Chelsea lacks the ability to blow teams away, adding that it will eventually cost them the top-four race.

“Thomas Tuchel needs to get Mason Mount and Timo Werner playing closer together for Chelsea,” Merson wrote in his Daily Star column.

“There is too much going on out wide with overlaps and crosses to no-one in the box at the moment, and nothing is coming through the middle.

“They have a lot of the ball, but the opposition keeper doesn’t have to be the man of the match to stop them scoring bundles.

“I still think Liverpool will finish in the top four ahead of them because I can’t see Chelsea blowing anybody away playing like this.

“How many times does Mount pass to Werner or vice versa? It’s minimal. They should be more connected with one another.

“It looks nice, but it’s a bit negative. I personally think Tuchel will get it right. He’s just going to need time.”
