Ex-Real Madrid President Lorenzo Sanz Dies After CoronaVirus Battle

Former Spanish club Real Madrid President Lorenzo Sanz has died aged 76 after being hospitalized with coronavirus.

His son Lorenzo Sanz Duran confirmed the news in a shocking and emotional message shared on Twitter.

“My father has just passed away,” he wrote.

“He never deserved to die in this manner.

“One of the most courageous, best and hard working people I have ever seen in my life. His entire family and Real Madrid were his passion.”

Sanz was Real Madrid President for five successful years in which he guided the club to two Champions League titles.

He was crucial in signing legendary stars such as Davor Suker, Roberto Carlos and Clarence Seedorf.

Real Madrid current President Florentino Perez took charge from Sanz in 2000 to start the Galactico era.

The pair did maintain a healthy relationship and went to battled again in the 2004 elections but Perez was victorious again.

Spain is one of the most affected countries by the coronavirus and they have 25,374 confirmed cases, including 1,378 recorded deaths.

La Liga has been suspended along with other European football leagues and it is still unclear when football will resume fully.

Real Madrid have placed their whole squad into quarantine to ensure their players are safe.

A club statement read: “The recommendation was to move into quarantine both the basketball and football first team given they both share the same facilities.”

Meanwhile, Real Madrid rival Barcelona have sent out a message of respect for the late Sanz.

Barcelona wrote: “We today regret the loss of Lorenzo Sanz Mancebo, who was Real Madrid president between 1995 and 2000, and we extend our condolences to his family, friends and the club. Rest in peace.”
