Newcastle smash their transfer record for £40m Brazilian striker Joelinton

Newcastle United have smashed their transfer record with the £40million signing of Brazilian striker Joelinton, a player Rafa Benitez thought was worth half that amount.

The former boss was reluctant to sanction such a sizeable move for the 22-year-old, who scored seven times for Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga last season.

But new head coach Steve Bruce has given the green light for the deal to be completed, such was the insistence of recruitment chief Steve Nickson that Joelinton could thrive in the Premier League.
