Atletico Madrid legend Diego Godin reveals why he turned down chance to sign for Manchester United

Atletico Madrid legend Diego Godin has revealed why he turned down a big-money move to Manchester United last summer.

The Uruguayan has since switched Madrid for Milan at the end of his Atletico contract, but had a chance to move to Old Trafford a year ago.

Instead, the now 33-year-old opted to spend another year at the Wanda Metropolitano, turning down the advances of Jose Mourinho.

'Yes, a year ago there were offers from Juventus, Manchester United, in the past also Man City,' Godin told Gazzetta dello Sport.

'But at that moment I had a contract in force with Atletico, I didn't think of leaving. This time it was different, I was near the end of my contract.'

Godin moved to Inter Milan on a free transfer at the start of the summer, bringing to an end his nine-year spell at Atletico.

For the legendary centre back, something was different when the hierarchy at Inter Milan came calling.

'I can say that no club convinced me how Inter managed to,' he added.

'They came alive first and decidedly with more conviction than other clubs. They showed me the project: it's ambitious, like me.

'And I liked the idea of being part of it and being able to help Inter realise it.'
