Ajax wonderkid Matthijs de Ligt has revealed Cristiano Ronaldo told him to join Juventus this summer despite Manchester United links. The teenage sensation shot to prominence in the 2018/19 season after guiding Ajax to their first domestic double in 17 years.
His exploits in the Champions League have also seen him become a hot prospect in Europe, attracting the attention of top clubs including United, Barcelona and Liverpool. Juventus have also been heavily linked with De Ligt who had a chat with Ronaldo moments after Portugal's UEFA Nations League over Netherlands on Sunday, June 9. Ronaldo eventually gave the 19-year-old defender a playful pat on the head after their brief chat to set tongues wagging. De Ligt has however lifted the lid on what the five-time Ballon d'Or winner told him.
Asked whether Ronaldo had urged him to join Juventus, De Ligt told Dutch publication NOS: "That could well be true." When pressed, De Ligt admitted that Ronaldo had asked him to join Juventus, stating: "I was a bit shocked, that’s why I laughed. But I didn’t say anything." The youngster has since disclosed he will head for a short break before making a decision on his next destination. It is believed United have already offered him a massive £350,000-a-week wages to seal a summer move to Old Trafford.
