Sunshine Stars Confident of Topflight Finish

Sunshine Stars players are confident the relegation-threatened club will survive the drop from the Nigeria Professional Football League despite their poor start to the season.

The Akure Gunners were rooted to the bottom of the NPFL table for the most part of the season but a resurgence in the latter part of the second stanza of the league has seen them move to 17th on the log, with just a game to go.

A win against Rivers United in the last game of the season will keep them in the topflight for another season and Sunshine players are confident they can get the job done.

Captain Abe Sunday said, “It’s been a tough season for us, but we’ve worked hard and we are confident of winning our last game to avoid going down.

“The deputy governor (Ondo State) has been trying his best to motivate us and he ensures we get our bonuses immediately after every game. His influence has really helped the team and we are sure of escaping relegation.”

Goalkeeper David Ariyo added, “It’s been a season where we have been faced with a lot of challenges but we continue to fight and we will do that until the last day. Rivers are a tough side but we are sure of finishing the hard job that we started and we believe we will be in the league next season.”

Midfielder, Fuad Ekelojuoti, believes team morale is high following recent form.

“You can feel it from our last six games, it has been a massive effort from the lads. We’ve been on our toes and we are not taken anything for granted anymore, we are giving it our all.

“We believe we can win the last game against Rivers United and ensure we remain in the league, that’s the mood right now.”
