 Adijat Idris

Nineteen-year-old Nigerian, Adijat Idris, was defeated by Ukraine’s Oksana Livach in the quarter-final of the wrestling women’s 50kg freestyle at the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The Ukrainian defeated Idris 10-0 by technical superiority on Friday.

If Livach reaches the final, Idris may have a chance to fight for Bronze through the repechages.

Adijat Idris is a young freestyle wrestler from Nigeria who, at 19 years old, qualified the country for the Tokyo Olympics at 50 kg.

She did so with a runner-up finish at the 2021 African & Oceania Wrestling Olympic Qualification Tournament.

On Tuesday, Nigeria’s Aminat Adeniyi lost in the round of 16 of the women’s freestyle 62kg event of the wrestling competition at the ongoing 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Adeniyi lost to Iryna Koliadenko of Ukraine by a pinfall in the fight at the Makuhari Messi Hall.

The 28-year-old Nigerian was leading 4-2 on technical points after two minutes 56 seconds in the fight’s first period, but she succumbed to a pinfall to give victory to her opponent.

The defeat was a blow to the 2019 African Games champion who was ranked 16th at the Rio Games in 2016 as a 58kg fighter and only moved up in weight in 2018.

Nigeria medal hopeful in wrestling Odunayo Adekuoroye also lost her 57kg weight category fight in the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Adekuoroye was defeated by fall by Anastasia Nichita of Moldova in a swift turn of events.

She was leading 8-2 before Nichita won through a pin in the round of 16.
