Paul Merson Names Chelsea’s Most Important Player

Arsenal legend, Paul Merson, has identified Mason Mount as Chelsea’s most important player.

There were fears that the England International will lose his position to either Kai Havertz, Timo Werner when Chelsea brought them in from Germany during the transfer market last summer.

However, Mason, Chelsea’s academy product, has proved to be a major player in the team and has cemented a regular playing time under Thomas Tuchel.

And Paul Merson spoke highly of Mount and rates him better than Timo Werner and Kai Havertz.

“Look how much money Chelsea spent on Kai Havertz and Timo Werner and they are nowhere near as important as Mount,” Merson wrote in his

“He’s the go-to man now, and that’s phenomenal at his age. He carries the team.

“The turn and shot for the goal against Porto. He knew what he was going to do before he got the ball. I think he’s top drawer.

“And I think Thomas Tuchel was surprised by how good he was. He didn’t pick him for his first game. But he’s the first name on the teamsheet now.

“He got left out against West Brom and look what happened.

“But it proves how important Mount is. He’s a team player and he gets them going. He’s been out on loan and kept going and earned his chance.”

Chelsea qualified for the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday despite losing 1-0 to Porto in the second-leg of the quarter-final having won the revered fixture 2-0. Both legs were played at a neutral ground, Sevilla.
