Jose Mourinho Reveals What He Said To Referee Andre Marriner After 1-0 Defeat To Chelsea

Jose Mourinho slammed referee Andre Marriner's performance in Tottenham's crushing 1-0 home defeat to Chelsea on Thursday.

Jorginho's first-half penalty was the difference as the Blues inflicted Spurs with their third consecutive Premier League defeat.

A frustrated Mourinho approached Marriner following the final whistle with the Portuguese revealing what he said to him during his post-match press conference.

He said: "I told him something that he knows already which is that I consider him one of the best referees in the Premier League and I care for him.

"He's a referee that I have a big admiration [for] and that gives me probably a good position to tell him that I didn't like his performance so it was basically like that.

"I have a very good relationship with Andre so that gives me a good position to tell him that I didn't like the performance."

Marriner pointed to the spot after Eric Dier fouled Timo Werner which the visitors scored from.

The Spurs boss continued: "The struggle was the penalty, in the end a penalty decides the game. In the end they score a penalty which is not a penalty that you say is a dangerous situation, one on one, almost scoring.

"It's a penalty that is difficult to accept and to lose the game like this is a bit painful.

"If you want to be pragmatic, one penalty, one goal, 1-0.

"When a team is in a difficult game against Chelsea, you concede that penalty and are affected by it.

"By the end of the first half I saw a team that was struggling but it was totally the opposite in the second half.

"We miss a lot of important players but the spirit in the second half is untouchable."

Tottenham's defeat also means Mourinho has now lost back-to-back home games for the first time in his glittering managerial career.

Thomas Tuchel's side move above their London rivals to sixth while Spurs occupy eighth-place.

Mourinho will look to get back to winning ways on Sunday when his team host West Brom.
