Nominees For 'Player Of The Century' Award Have Been Revealed

The Ballon d'Or might not be getting handed out in 2020 but there is going to be an award for 'Player of the Century,' despite the fact we're only 20 years into the century.

France Football decided that the Ballon d'Or wouldn't be given out after the long pause to the football season between March and June.

The decision was widely criticised due to the fact the season was still finished, and many thought that Robert Lewandowski was hard done by and that they Bayern Munich striker would have been a shoe in to win.

Lewandowski can at least find some solace in the fact he's one of 28 players nominated for 'Player of the Century,' although it seems unlikely he'll win.

The award is being handed out at the Globe Soccer Awards, organised by EFAA (European Association of Player's Agents) and the ECA (European Club Association), and they announced the nominees on Twitter.

If it seems ridiculous to be deciding a 'Player of the Century,' rather than a 'Player of the Past 20 Years' then it's even more ridiculous that it's not the first time the award has been handed out.

The Globe Soccer Awards has only been going since 2010, when only four awards were handed out, and in 2012 they named Diego Maradona as the 'Best Player of the Century.'

Presumably that award would have at least been for the previous, already completed century, but it just makes this award, only eight years later, seem all the weirder.

It's not just the players of the previous 100 years who can win an award as the 'Club of the Century,' 'Coach of the Century' and 'Agent of the Century' awards will all be up for grabs too.

In case you're wondering who to back for the agent award, Jorge Mendes has won 'Agent of the Year' on nine of the 10 occasions the awards has taken place. Mino Raiola's victory in 2016 is the only exception.
