Arsenal and Manchester United are set to go head to head to sign Villarreal defender Pau Torres.
The stylish centre-back was thought to be a target for Premier League clubs this summer, but a move did not materialize.
And according to Spanish outlet Todo Fichajes, Arsenal are interested in another centre-half, despite Gabriel and William Saliba joining their squad this summer.
United have their own issues in defence, with Harry Maguire in poor form and neither Eric Bailly or Victor Lindelof looking particularly convincing.
The league places of both clubs when the January window opens may go some way to determining where Torres decides to go, if he is offered the chance to sign for either club.
