I Would Never Manage Tottenham - Chelsea Coach Frank Lampard After Jose Mourinho Appointment

Chelsea Coach Frank Lampard has insisted that he would never manage Tottenham after Jose Mourinho's recent appointment. Mourinho made a vow in 2015 that he would never take over at Tottenham due to his affection with Chelsea - only to go back on his word as he took the Spurs job on Wednesday.

Lampard, who revealed the pair shared a few messages following Mourinho's appointment as Mauricio Pochettino's successor, is ready to be quoted on his own vow in 10 years time.

'I can firmly say no, and you can replay that in 10 years,' he said.

'It wouldn't happen.'

When asked whether Mourinho's decision is a mark of disrespect to a supporter base who saw him lift three Premier League titles at Stamford Bridge, Lampard played down the idea of animosity.

'Mourinho has worked at a lot of clubs and you have to respect his right to work,' he added.

'That's his decision, whether fans judge you or not is out of your hands.'

Lampard became a key part of the teams that delivered great success to Chelsea under Mourinho, not least in his first spell when he arrived from Porto in 2004.

But the former Chelsea and Manchester City midfielder, who is preparing for a game this weekend involving two of the teams he played for, also had a relationship with sacked boss Pochettino.

When you ask about Pochettino, I have huge respect for him,' Lampard said.

'I met him a few times. I went to Tottenham's training ground when I was doing my badges and he showed me hospitality. He is a classy man.'

Pochettino was dismissed with Tottenham in 14th, 11 points off Manchester City in fourth, and Mourinho has his work cut out to close the gap with 12 games already gone in the season.

But for Lampard, the appointment of his old boss ensures that Tottenham are firmly in contention to secure Champions League football, such is Mourinho's ability.

He added: 'History and results speak for themselves. The titles he has won at the clubs he has worked at are not shocks because of the work he has put in.

'He has done it consistently. That's what we measure him by.'
