Chelsea Are Not Title Contenders - Frank Lampard

The Blues now have 26 points after 12 games, the same tally as second placed Leicester City, and are eight points off league leaders Liverpool. However, Lampard, who is only in his second season of his managerial career, insisted his men are not currently title contenders.

“To say [we are title contenders] would be a bit naive because we are not even a third of the way through the season,” said Lampard.

“If we can keep replicating the form, keep replicating the results, then we can certainly close the gap and I think that is the first step.”

Lampard took Derby County to the Championship playoff final last season before leaving the Rams to return to the club where he made his name as a player.

However, the Blues legend knew he was taking over in difficult circumstances, as the club had sold Eden Hazard to Real Madrid in the summer and were also under a two-window transfer embargo.

Due to the ban the club were unable to sign any players in the summer, although Chelsea are hoping an appeal will see it lifted to they can look to add players in January.

But while the transfer ban has allowed Lampard the freedom to develop the club’s younger players, he isn’t getting carried away following their recent good results.

“I certainly won’t announce ourselves in a title race because we are relatively new and because we are slightly in transition with younger players,” said Lampard.

“To get carried away we would be our biggest enemy.”

Tammy Abraham, 22, who last season was playing in the Championship with Aston Villa, opened Chelsea’s account against the Eagles when he scored his tenth goal of the season.
