Plans To Make Salah Egypt Captain Fails

Al Ahly midfielder, Ahmed Fathi has refused to hand over captaincy to Mohamed Salah as requested by Head coach Hossam El Badry.

Egypt’s plan to hand the captain’s armband to Mohamed Salah is to apologise for the FIFA Best awards debacle as some votes for him to win The Best FIFA Men’s Player award were not counted.

The Liverpool star raised eyebrows of a possible withdrawal from Egypt’s team after removing all references on his social media accounts.

Making him skipper of the team is an attempt to win him back but current skipper Fathi, former Sheffield United and Hull midfielder, has resisted the idea of stepping down as the Pharaohs’ armband wearer.

‘Yes, [Ahmed] Fathi was requested to give Egypt’s captain armband to Mohamed Salah,’ The 34-year-old’s agent Nader Shawky told ON Sport channel.

“Fathi was left surprised by this request and turned it down. I think he will not continue with the national team if the captaincy is taken off him.”

Shawky insisted that Fathi would have to leave the National team if stripped of the captaincy.

“He will not join the national team if he is stripped off the captaincy. And as far as I understand, Salah will not accept to be given the armband while Fathi is present.”

In defence, coach Hossam El Badry said: “I want to give the badge to a player who can lead the team — not only for the older player in the squad.

“I’ll ask players for their opinions about who deserves to be the captain because we need a star.”
