Alan Shearer reveals his battle to stay fit after retiring from football

Alan Shearer revealed his struggle to get fit after retiring from football as he launched a new fitness studio in Northumberland.

The Newcastle United hero officially opened the new Speedflex studio at No1 Gym in Ponteland, where he was put through his paces in a 30-minute class.

Shearer is a longtime fan of Speedflex sessions, use hydraulic machine-based technology to offer a high intensity workout - without any crippling muscle pain afterwards.

The former England captain said: "It's the only thing I can do, because of my knees and ankles and back, that's got no pain or adverse effects out of it. I do that and I go cycling two or three times a week.

"I can't run because of the pressure and stress it puts on your joints.

"But you can do this whatever age you are, whether you're a teenager or coming up to 50 like I am.

"It's great for your mindset as well, you have to exercise.

"When I finished playing in 2006, after training every day for 20 years, I did nothing at first. Then after five or six weeks I thought 'I have to do something'.

"I think just because of the repetitive nature of training every day once I had a break I needed to find something.

"Your body can't cope with not doing anything."

Shearer also praised Newcastle's recent bumper weekend of sport, which saw international rugby quickly followed by the Great North Run and the Tour of Britain, saying it could encourage more people to take up exercise.

"The more the merrier - whether it's walking, jogging or swimming, you have to do something. All the experts will tell you that."

Founded and formed in 2011 by business entrepreneur Graham Wylie CBE, alongside CEO Paul Ferris, Sppedflex allows up to 16 individuals to train together regardless of their fitness level. A Speedflex session includes a combination of eight Speedflex machines and eight auxiliary stations.

Mr Ferris said: "“We’re absolutely thrilled to be partnering with No1 Gym. “We’re especially excited because No1 is in Alan’s hometown of Ponteland, and we’re delighted he could be here for the launch.

"We know the new studio will bring something new to the local community and hopefully, it will encourage more people in the area to adopt a healthy, active lifestyle. Complemented by James’ already excellent fitness offering, we are confident it will be a huge success.”
