Rodri paid £63 million to break out of his deal at Atletico Madrid

Rodrigo Hernandez's move to Manchester City appeared to take a step closer on Wednesday as the Atletico Madrid player paid his release clause.

Rodri reportedly went to La Liga's headquarters in Madrid and made a payment of €70 million (£63m).

The 23-year-old's dream is to play under Pep Guardiola and the City boss is interested in bringing him to the club to provide depth in defensive midfield.

According to the Spanish press, Rodri had grown concerned at the level of ambition at Atletico.

He is also meant to be Spain's long-term successor to Sergio Busquets in the holding midfield position.

Rodri registered 84 appearances for Villarreal before making a £22m move to join Diego Simeone's side in May 2018.
