Chelsea set to sign Mateo Kovacic on a permanent deal

Chelsea are on the brink of completing a deal to sign Mateo Kovacic from Real Madrid - despite the Blues' transfer ban.

The west London club are not able to make any transfer this summer after they were slapped with a two-window transfer ban by FIFA, following an investigation into signing foreign under-18 players.

But because Kovacic is already registered to the Blues, due to his loan spell in Stamford Bridge last season, he will be able to return - but only if they complete the deal before July 1.

Kovacic is said to be keen to stay at Chelsea having been told he is not in Zinedine Zidane's plans at the Bernabeu.

His loan is due to end on June 30 but currently managerless Chelsea are close to splashing £45million on him, according to Sky Sports.
